University of Miami Knight Physics Building — Research Laboratory

Transformation of an instrument lab into a specialized physics research suite for highly sensitive scientific equipment.

Project overview

3D model of a renovated physics research laboratory

Progresíve provided electrical engineering for the multidisciplinary renovation of Room 123, transforming an existing instrument laboratory into wet and dry laboratories, a central work area, student workspace, and equipment rooms.

The suite supports scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes, vibration-cancellation tables, vacuum pumps, ovens, and high-voltage supplies. The design delivered dedicated circuits at 120 V, 208 V, and 480 V, specialized grounding for sensitive instrumentation, and a dedicated UPS with supplemental batteries providing at least 60 minutes of backup at full equipment load — coordinated with a 96-inch fume hood, laboratory exhaust, gases, and emergency shower and eyewash.

Highlights

  • UPS-backed power with 60+ minutes of runtime
  • Specialized grounding for precision instruments
  • Coordination with fume hood, exhaust, and lab gases
